The new geometric shape GÖMBÖC now in online shop

GÖMBÖC

Aschaffenburg, June 10th 2008 - The newly discovered geometric shape Gömböc can now be purchased online.

A Gömböc (pronounced as "goemboets") is a three-dimensional body having the fascinating ability to always "swing back" to the same original position, similar to "weeble" toys, but without added weight – just on the basis of its shape.

Only two years ago, the two Hungarian mathematicians Gábor Domokos and Péter Várkonyi succeeded in developing the sensational Gömböc-shape. For many years, the scientists were analyzing the equilibrium points of three-dimensional bodies. The example was set by nature: some turtles are able to free themselves from lying on their back by turning over on their own. 15 years ago, one of the greatest living mathematicians, Vladimir Arnold, for the first time pointed out the possibility that such a shape may exist.

The term Gömböc is actually derived from the Hungarian word Gömb, the sphere. In 2010, the Gömböc will be the official symbol for Hungary at the World Exposition in Shanghai. Numerous journals have already reported on this impressive "homogeneous weeble", among them Der Spiegel and GEO-Magazin. The New York Times Magazine even selected the Gömböc as one of the 70 most interesting discoveries of 2007.

Now, it can finally be purchased. The internationally operating e-commerce specialist 004 Gmbh was chosen for the realization of the web shop and will run the shop together with the inventors. It is the only shop worldwide where Gömböcs can be purchased.

For the start, the shop offers three standard models made with precision of different materials (plexiglass, aluminium and bronze). A Gömböc with a diameter of 10 cm has a tolerance of 0.01 mm.

In the near future, the product range will be extended. The Gömböc will then be available on advance order in different sizes and in limited edition with serial number; but the personalized version with engraved name is also being planned. The shop and further information are available at: www.gomboc-shop.com.
